McCain's campaign defends Palin's fashion expenses
WASHINGTON, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Republican presidential candidate John McCain's campaign defended vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's fashion expenses that has grabbed public and media attention with only days before the election day.
The wardrobe controversy was expanded with a report saying Palin's stylist, Amy Strozzi, was paid 22,800 U.S. dollars for the first two weeks in October, while McCain's foreign policy adviser, Randy Scheunemann, was paid only 12,500 dollars during the same period.
An earlier report disclosed that the Republican National Committee has spent 150,000 dollars of political donation to cover Palin's expense on clothing, makeup and other fashion needs.
Despite the repeated clarification that the purchased clothes would go to charity after campaign, the news stories still incited public furor as the country was caught in a worst economic crisis since 1930s.
The McCain campaign broke its silence on the matter and provided some details to media on Friday, saying Palin "did not ask for or want any new clothes."
"About a third of them have been returned, a third of them sit in the belly of the plane and are available to her and her family for special campaign events, TV appearances and ad filming," said McCain's senior adviser Nicolle Wallace. "Another third was made available to her family for the public events during convention week."
Wallace also criticized the media storm about the wardrobe controversy as a terrible disservice to her and involved a "double-standard for women in politics."
"That any aspect of her shoes, clothes or appearance has become a distraction is a terrible commentary on the state of the media and politics," she said. "Let's get on with our great debate about the best direction for the country in these challenging times for our economy and our nation's security."
Palin, the Alaska governor, also defended herself in a Thursday night TV interview, saying "those clothes are not my property."
She also noted that her family usually shop frugally, and "it's kind of painful to be criticized for something when all the facts are not out there and are not reported."

Toronto Fashion Week lives up to 'fabulous' tagline
Canadian designers were the toast of Toronto yesterday for L'Oréal Fashion Week's finale. Lucian Matis, Afshin Feiz and Denis Gagnon secured the coveted Friday evening timeslots, reminding the audience of the sheer strength of Canada's artistic talent.
The crowd gasped in unison as Matis' first number graced the runway. The loosely draped silk dress with floral overlay and jewel-incrusted neckline set the tone for the show. Matis repeated the flower print for several dresses and used a red silk for high waisted pants, an evening gown and a blouse emblazoned with a Warhol-style illustration.
Matis' models wore turban-inspired headdress that added a dramatic feel to his designs. His final number, a white wig and lavender tulle dress with a fitted bodice and white legging
s, was reminiscent of Marie-Antoinette.
Until November 16th, the ROM's Patricia Harris Gallery of Textiles & Costume features a dress that belonged to Marie-Antoinette. Out of the vaults for a special viewing, the two-piece court dress embodies the French Queen's fashion sense -- and excess -- with its satin, silk, baubles and glass beads.
Drawing from this concept of rich fabrics and romance was Afshin Feiz's spring collection that featured sheer white chemises with tailored white shorts and skirts with chain and ruffle details. His pastel dresses featured feminine cutouts that accentuated the shoulders, neck and upper back.
A layered lavender dress with thick ruffled lapel floated down the runway with a satin train following. Although Feiz now resides closer to the palais de Versailles than his childhood home of Vancouver, his Canadian roots were showing last night. Immediately after this magnificent lavender dress exited the stage came Feiz to take his bow wearing a red "kiss me I'm Canadian" tee.
For Denis Gagnon's 'colour shock' show he diverged from creamy spring hues with bold red, pink, gold, white and black leather and
jersey dresses. With great attention to texture and form Gagnon's dresses were tied and braided with function in mind.
Models carried beautiful leather handbags Gagnon created exclusively for Fullum & Holt. His striking accessories, like winding spiked acrylic bracelets, evoked the African tribal influence in some late 19th century artwork like that of Jawlensky and Matisse. Denis Gagnon's show was simply fabulous.

Lots up Michelle Jank's fashionable sleeve
Fashion favourite Michelle Jank is in talks with a Perth gallery about holding her first exhibition in her home city of Perth next year.
Jank's star is shining brighter than ever thanks to her first foray into costuming, with the Sydney Dance Company's current production Sid's Waltzing Masquerade benefiting from the designer's gorgeous creations.
Combined with her third season showing at the Paris fashion shows and the resulting European orders for her delicate and beautiful creations, Jank has been kept busy over the past months.
Jank said Sid's Waltzing Masquerade will not be her last costuming project.
She feels choreographer Aszure Barton and herself are kindred spirits and costuming is the right fit for her designing talents.
The pair has been discussing working together on a new project in New York.
"She is a great discovery in my life," Jank says.
Working with dancers to create a special feel on stage was a new creative challenge that had proved the right fit.
"It was always about magnifying a feeling that she was creating, or perhaps creating tension and balance, adding texture where needed," Jank says of the current project."
I feel like it was somewhat like working on a large scale painting. Thinking about how the movement and shapes of the costumes affect the negative and positive space of the stage.
"Jank is about to commence work on the new 2009 campaign for the Sydney Dance Company and will be staying put in Sydney until closing night.
Planning on coming home for Christmas, the designer has even more projects up her fashionable sleeve.
"I am in the early days of planning a big collaboration with my creative friends in Sydney next year, a really big scale art work encompassing film, painting, dance, costume… it will be something pretty major," Jank says.
When she returns to Perth later this year Jank will hook up with mentor Wendy Marshall, who owns high end fashion boutique Elle in Nedlands.
"I'm looking forward to talking to Wendy about my next creative plans, that's my ritual," Jank says.
"She is my mentor and inspiration always."
A red-hot night for Red Carpet Event
The weather was as hot as the event the other night as guests spilled out onto the streets of Hillview to enjoy The Red Carpet Event, Hollywood Style. The 5 O'Clock Club, Big Sugar and the Hillview Grill pulled together to host the event for All Faiths Food Bank and the Generoso Foundation, which helps musicians and the good guys in the service industry.

On the final night at Woodlands Village, emcee Alan Kretschmar of the Players Theatre serenaded the semifinalists while the panel of judges deliberated ... and finally crowned Gray winner.

Sorry to say goodbye to Cheryl and Nigel Frampton … moving to Portland, Ore., and just tying up loose ends last week. In the four years they have been here, Cheryl -- a dynamic, energetic little blonde -- put on some of this town's biggest and best parties, like the last two New Year's Eve bashes downtown, the Monster Ball at Halloween, Black on State and more. T-shirt thief gets 14-month prison term
MINDEN, La. -- A Haughton man has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for stealing two packs of T-shirts.
Parish prosecutors say state District Judge Ford Stinson handed down the lengthy sentence to 40-year-old Dexter Rhodes for the misdemeanor crime because he had two prior misdemeanor theft convictions.
Sherb Sentell, the chief assistant district attorney for Webster Parish, says had Rhodes' criminal record been clean, he typically would have faced six months of parish jail time. Sentell says their administration will not pass repeat offenders off to other jurisdictions with only a slap on the wrist.

Striker Heskey is back in fashion for England
LONDON: Emile Heskey is back in demand for England after a long spell in the shadows but the Wigan forward insists he never felt like
Heskey was the unsung hero of England’s stunning 4-1 victory over Croatia in last month’s crucial World Cup qualifier in Zagreb.
The former Liverpool star linked impressively with Wayne Rooney and gave Croatia’s defenders a torrid time with his combination of power and poise in his first start for coach Fabio Capello.
It was just like old times for Heskey, who formed an equally impressive little and large partnership with Michael Owen during Sven Goran Eriksson’s reign.
Heskey was eventually disgarded by Eriksson as a combination of poor form and Rooney’s emergence took its toll. But, with Capello showing little faith in Owen, there is a vacancy for a foil to Rooney and Heskey grabbed his chance with both hands against the Croatians.
“I don’t know if I went out of fashion but it’s nice to be wanted,” he said.
“Obviously the game against Croatia was tailor made for me because I like to put myself about and they had
some pretty big centre halves. So it was nice. It was physical but I don’t mind that.
“Not having played for about four years it’s just nice to be back. When I first came back it was strange because there were so many young players. I thought I was young myself but when you come into this squad, you feel a little bit old!”
The 30-year-old, who could miss today’s qualifier against Kazakhstan with a back injury, has been a revitalised figure since joining Wigan from Birmingham in 2006 and is benefitting from taking a more laidback approach to the game.
“I’m a bit more relaxed when it comes to football,” he said.
“When you’re younger, you’re really tense when you’re going into game and you get really nervous.
“I can see it in some of the lads when they go out on the pitch. For me, it’s not like it’s another game but you
prepare differently and you focus your mind a lot better.”
Heskey’s physical presence and selfless nature allowed Rooney to thrive in his favoured role, just behind a targetman, against Croatia. It is a role Heskey is happy to fulfil if it brings the best out of Rooney.
“You never know until you actually play with someone what the partnership’s going to be like.
“Wayne’s a fantastic player €” he’s shown that over the years €” but you never know how it’s going to work out,” Heskey said.
“It’s only when you start playing with them that you get a little understanding, knowing where he’s going to run and where you need to be, and you kind of build your game around your partner.
“He’s a fantastic talent so I hope I am getting the best out of him.” €” AFP

Alexander McQueen Wears Bunny Suit, Model Faints at Paris Show
Alexander McQueen's spring 2009 show in Paris ended a few hours ago. And McQueen took his bow in a bunny suit with some animal friends looking on in a fabulous Museum of Natural History–meets–high fashion setup we thought only existed in our wildest (zing!) dreams. (No, seriously — we love that museum.)
On a more somber note, however, the show wasn't all as fun as a trip to the museum. One model fainted as she exited the runway and had to be carried out.

Valentino Appoints New Designers, Doesn’t Tell Facchinetti
After the spring 2009 Valentino show in Paris on Friday, company CEO Stefano Sassi told reporters it was designer Alessandra Facchinetti's last collection for the house. Over the weekend the company confirmed Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, who have designed accessories for Valentino for ages, will take over as creative directors. However, Facchinetti wrote in a public e-mail the media heard of her dismissal before she did:"It was with deep regret that I learnt from the press that I would no longer be working with Valentino…
"This news came as a great surprise since the company's top management has not yet seen fit to inform me. Sarah Palin’s Hairstylist Has Been Identified!
The red highlights. The lash-skimming bangs. The half–French braid. And of course, that inimitable bouffant. Sarah Palin's hair has become as much of a conversation topic as that kitschy wink. But we all know a working mom with five kids can't get a mini-hive so smooth all on her own. Enter: Angela the hairstylist. W magazine recently learned that Angela has been traveling with Palin. She's based at the Hair Grove in Westlake Village, California, where she won't be available again until November 4.
W wasn't able to confirm Angela's last name since "the Hair Grove stopped answering our questions." But the magazine did find out how Palin found Hair Grove. So who lent a helping hand? Cindy McCain, of course! McCain directed Palin to the salon, which is where she found her own current stylist, Piper. McCain had reportedly inquired at the salon about extensions. Thankfully, she doesn't appear to have gotten them. But we wonder if McCain passed Angela down to Palin and took Piper for herself. McCain did sport a slight bouffant herself a couple of months ago but has recently — and wisely — taken to wearing her hair down. Guess we'll never know.
