Health: August vitals

Play the fitness game, fall in love with Pilates and raise a glass to resveratrol.

3 good reasons to spend cinq à sept at the wine bar

1. You might stay younger longerResveratrol, a buzzword compound found in red wine, is thought to help the body fight off degenerative diseases and help increase lifespan. Previous research came to that conclusion using large amounts of resveratrol on mice, but a recent study, published in science journal Plos One, found similar results with a much lower dose. Watch for resveratrol supplements, as everyone scrambles to find miracle anti-aging elixirs.
2. You might stay thinner
Resveratrol has also been found to reduce fat cells in the body, and hinder their storage, in findings that were presented at the Endocrine Society’s annual meeting in San Francisco this summer. Although it’s early days, it means the compound could potentially be used to prevent or treat obesity.
3. You might be less likely to get arthritis
Moderate alcohol consumption may reduce the risk of getting rheumatoid arthritis, according to an analysis of two studies published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. Subjects who drank the most alcohol had up to a 50 per cent less chance of getting it than those who drank the least, especially among those who smoked.
